Dental Implant Frequently Asked Questions
Are dental implants safe?
Yes, dental implants are a safe and well-established treatment. Our expert team and quality implants ensure the best outcomes.
What causes implant failure?
Implant failure can occur due to poor oral hygiene, gum disease, insufficient bone density, smoking, or excessive pressure on the implant. In some cases, the body may not integrate well with the implant, leading to loosening. Early detection and regular dental check-ups are key to preventing failure. At Parkview Dental Centre, our experienced team ensures that each patient is assessed thoroughly to reduce risks and support the long-term success of dental implants.
How do dental implants work?
Dental implants are a long-lasting solution for replacing missing teeth. They involve placing a small titanium post into the jawbone, which acts as an artificial tooth root. Over time, the bone fuses with the implant through a process called osseointegration. Once healed, a crown is attached to complete the restoration. At Parkview Dental Centre, our experienced dentist in Ipswich ensures every dental implant procedure is tailored to your needs. If you’re considering dental implants in Ipswich, we can guide you through the process and explain the dental implants cost clearly, helping you make an informed decision about your oral health.
Why do I need dental implants?
Dental implants are an excellent solution for replacing missing teeth and restoring your smile's function and appearance. Here are some reasons why you might need dental implants:
- Improved Oral Health: Missing teeth can lead to bone loss in the jaw and shifting of adjacent teeth, which can cause bite problems and further tooth loss. Dental implants help maintain the integrity of your jawbone and prevent these issues.
- Enhanced Aesthetics: Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth, providing a more attractive and secure smile.
- Better Functionality: Unlike dentures, dental implants are fixed in place, allowing you to eat and speak without worry. They provide the same chewing force as natural teeth, improving your ability to enjoy a varied diet.
- Durability and Longevity: With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime, making them a cost-effective and durable solution for tooth replacement.
Comfort and Convenience: Dental implants eliminate the discomfort and inconvenience of removable dentures. They are permanent, easy to care for, and do not require special adhesives or cleaning solutions.
Are dental implants permanent?
Dental implants are designed to be a long-lasting solution for missing teeth. With proper care and regular dental check-ups, they can last many years, often a lifetime. Parkview Dental Centre ensures high-quality implant placement and ongoing support to help maintain your implants in good condition. However, factors such as oral hygiene, overall health, and lifestyle habits can affect their longevity.
Can anyone get dental implants?
Most adults with good overall and oral health are suitable candidates for implants. A detailed assessment will determine your suitability.
Can dental implants get infected?
Yes, dental implants can develop a condition called peri-implantitis, an infection in the gums or bone surrounding the implant. This is often due to plaque buildup or poor oral hygiene. Symptoms include swelling, bleeding, or discomfort. At Parkview Dental Centre, we educate patients on proper care and offer professional cleanings to help prevent infection and maintain implant health.
How long do dental implants last?
With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime, making them a worthwhile investment in your oral health.
Can smokers have dental implants?
Smokers may still be considered for dental implants, but smoking can affect healing and increase the risk of implant problems. At Parkview Dental Centre, your dentist can discuss your oral health, smoking habits and any steps that may help improve treatment outcomes before implant treatment begins.
Can I get dental implants if I smoke?
Smoking can impact the success of dental implants by affecting healing and increasing the risk of complications. At Parkview Dental Centre, the dentist will assess your individual situation and discuss how smoking might influence the implant procedure and outcomes. Quitting or reducing smoking before and after treatment can improve your chances of successful implant integration.
Does dental implant treatment hurt?
Implant procedures are performed under local anaesthesia, minimising discomfort. Post-treatment tenderness is manageable with over-the-counter painkillers.
Can older adults have dental implants?
Yes, older adults may be suitable for dental implants, provided their gums, jawbone and general health can support treatment. Age alone is not usually the deciding factor. A dental assessment can help identify whether implants are suitable and whether any additional care is needed before treatment.
Can dental implants stain or discolour?
While dental implants themselves don’t stain like natural teeth, the crown (the visible part) can become discoloured over time if made of certain materials. Habits like smoking or consuming staining foods may affect the appearance of the surrounding area. Parkview Dental Centre uses high-quality crowns and offers care advice to help maintain their original shade and appearance.
Do dental implants require special care?
Yes, dental implants require special care to ensure their longevity and success. Here are some key points regarding the care of dental implants:
Oral Hygiene: Brushing and flossing around dental implants are essential to prevent plaque buildup and gum disease. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to avoid damaging the implant or surrounding tissues.
Regular Dental Check-ups: Regular visits to your dentist for check-ups and professional cleanings are crucial to monitor the health of your implants and address any issues early
Avoiding Hard Foods: Avoid chewing on hard foods or objects that could potentially damage the implant or restoration
Quit Smoking: Smoking can negatively affect the success of dental implants. If you smoke, quitting can improve the longevity of your implants
Mouthguards: If you grind your teeth at night or participate in contact sports, wearing a mouthguard can help protect your implants from damage.
Dietary Considerations: Eating a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals can support overall oral health and the success of your implants
Following these guidelines can help ensure the long-term success of your dental implants and maintain your oral health.
What is the success rate for dental implants?
Dental implants are known for their high success rates, typically around 95%. However, this rate can be influenced by several factors, including the patient’s overall and oral health, the specific location of the implant in the jaw, and the skill of the dental professional performing the procedure. With appropriate care and maintenance, dental implants can offer a durable and effective solution for replacing missing teeth.
Can dental implants improve my oral health?
Yes, dental implants can significantly improve your oral health. By replacing missing teeth, implants help prevent the shifting of surrounding teeth and reduce the risk of bone loss in the jaw. This contributes to maintaining the structure of your face and the alignment of your teeth. Additionally, dental implants make it easier to maintain good oral hygiene since they can be brushed and flossed like natural teeth, reducing the risk of gum disease and cavities.
What are the alternatives to dental implants?
There are several alternatives to dental implants, including dentures, dental bridges, resin-bonded bridges, removable partial dentures, flipper dentures, orthodontic treatment, and choosing to do nothing.
Dentures are removable appliances that replace missing teeth, while dental bridges are fixed appliances that bridge the gap between adjacent teeth.
Resin-bonded bridges are less invasive than traditional bridges but may not be as durable. Removable partial dentures are another removable option that can replace missing teeth.
Orthodontic treatment such as braces or Invisalign may be used to move existing teeth into the correct position to close gaps left by missing teeth.
Ultimately, the best treatment option depends on the individual's specific needs and circumstances, and it's important to consult with a dentist to determine the most suitable alternative to dental implants
Who is an ideal candidate for dental implants?
A good candidate for dental implants is someone who has one or more missing teeth and a healthy jawbone capable of supporting the implants. They should have healthy oral tissues and not have any health conditions that would interfere with bone healing. Candidates are typically those who are unable or unwilling to wear dentures and are looking to improve their speech and comfort. It is important that they are committed to maintaining good oral hygiene and regular dental visits. Additionally, being a non-smoker or being willing to quit smoking is crucial, as smoking can impede the healing process. A consultation with a dental professional is essential to determine if dental implants are suitable based on individual health and dental conditions. Schedule your appointment with Parkview Dental Centre to find out if dental implants are the right option for you.
How long does the dental implant process take?
The dental implant process typically takes several months to complete, starting with an initial consultation and treatment planning where your dentist evaluates your oral health and develops a treatment plan.
The next step involves the surgical placement of the implant into the jawbone, followed by a healing period of several months for osseointegration.
Once the implant has integrated with the jawbone, an abutment is placed, and a custom-made crown, bridge, or denture is attached to replace the missing tooth or teeth.
Follow-up visits are necessary to ensure the implant is functioning properly, and regular dental check-ups are important for long-term success.
Overall, the process can take anywhere from several months to over a year, depending on the individual case and the healing process.
How much do dental implants cost at Parkview?
Costs start from £3000, varying according to individual treatment plans.
Can people with gum disease get dental implants?
People with gum disease may need treatment before dental implants are considered. Healthy gums are important for supporting implants and reducing the risk of complications. Your dentist will assess the condition of your gums and recommend any care needed before planning implant treatment.
How do dental implants affect eating and speaking?
Dental implants can significantly improve your ability to eat and speak compared to traditional dentures. Because dental implants are securely anchored in the jawbone, they provide a stable foundation that mimics the function of natural teeth. This stability allows you to chew food more effectively without worrying about the implants shifting or slipping. Additionally, dental implants can improve speech by eliminating the discomfort and insecurity often associated with ill-fitting dentures, which can slip or cause mumbling. With dental implants, you can enjoy your favourite foods and speak comfortably without any fear of embarrassment or discomfort.
How do dental implants benefit those with full or partial dentures?
Dental implants offer several benefits for those with full or partial dentures. They provide a stable and secure foundation for the dentures, improving their fit and comfort. This stability prevents the dentures from slipping or shifting, making it easier to speak and chew. Additionally, dental implants help to preserve the jawbone, preventing bone loss that can occur with traditional dentures. They also contribute to a more natural appearance and feel, enhancing overall oral health and quality of life.
