Dental Hygiene FAQs
What causes gum disease?
Gum disease is mainly caused by a build-up of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth. When not removed through regular brushing and flossing, it can irritate the gums and lead to inflammation. Other contributing factors may include smoking, certain medical conditions, and inconsistent oral care habits.
Why is Fluoride Important?
Fluoride is a natural mineral that strengthens teeth and helps prevent decay. Its application during dental visits provides an extra layer of protection, especially for children and adults at risk of cavities.
Can gum disease be reversed?
In its early stage, known as gingivitis, gum disease can often be managed and improved with professional care and good oral hygiene. Regular cleaning, improved brushing and flossing, and guidance from a dental professional can support gum recovery. More advanced stages may require ongoing management to control progression.
What is Periodontal Treatment?
A thorough examination of your mouth's soft tissues, checking for any signs of cancer. It's a quick, painless process but crucial for early detection.
Can dental hygienists remove stains?
Yes, dental hygienists can remove many surface stains caused by food, drinks, or smoking. Professional cleaning helps lift discolouration from the tooth surface, leaving teeth looking cleaner. However, deeper stains may require additional treatment, which your dentist can discuss during your visit.
What type of toothbrush should I use?
A soft-bristled toothbrush is generally recommended as it cleans effectively while being gentle on teeth and gums. Electric toothbrushes can also support consistent cleaning, especially for those who find manual brushing less effective. Choose a brush with a comfortable grip and a small head to reach all areas of the mouth.
Can Gum Disease Really Lead to Tooth Loss?
Yes, untreated gum disease can progress to periodontal disease, causing the gums to pull away from the teeth and potentially leading to tooth loss. Regular dental hygiene appointments and proper home care are crucial for prevention.
What Does a Dental Hygiene Appointment Include?
A routine appointment includes a full clean of your teeth and gums, professional removal of plaque and tartar, and personalised oral care advice to maintain your dental health.
How often should I visit the dentist for hygiene visits?
Most people benefit from a hygiene visit every six months, though this may vary depending on individual oral health needs. At Parkview Dental Centre, your dentist in Ipswich can recommend a personalised schedule based on your gum health, medical history, and daily care routine.
What happens during a dental hygiene appointment?
A hygiene appointment involves a thorough clean to remove plaque and tartar from the teeth and gum line. The hygienist will also assess gum health, provide tailored advice on brushing and flossing, and may apply fluoride if needed. At Parkview Dental Centre, patients are guided through each step to support ongoing oral care.
How Often Should I Book a Dental Hygiene Appointment?
We recommend scheduling a dental hygiene appointment every 6 months, though some individuals may require more frequent visits depending on their oral health status.

diane hilder I’m a very nervous patient and just moved to the area, so was dreading my first visit here. However Mr Jacob McKenzie was very caring, patient in explaining everything he was doing and soon put me at ease. The reception staff are also very welcoming.
Amanda Good 10/10 dental practice- receptionist's are polite, friendly & very caring. They are always so nice to me even when I’m in abit of a panic about having to book in for treatment. AMAZING front of house team! . Then there is Alex, the most amazing dentist- I appreciate Alex’s care, professionalism & patience he shows me when I visit from a check up to dental work needing to be done. Alex is such a calming presence who makes you feel at ease & not silly when I’m expressing how worried or anxious I feel when I have to have a filling or if I just have a niggling feeling somethings not right, he listens & re assures me completely.
